Is sleeping under a fan a good idea?

If you are planning to own a fan, then this would not be a good idea for everyone as per researchers. The scorching heat of the summer can ,make you feel worried but think about using the fan after reading this article

Few good reasons why fans can help you for betterment:

Fan sound can make you fall asleep:

The sound produced by the fan is similar to the white noise. This white noise has a broad spectrum of sound frequencies, generating a hum that can help people fall asleep.

People are attracted to the idea of white noise to help with sleep and, for those odd birds who find it difficult to fall asleep in complete silence, it’s also helpful in creating noise.

If there’s a lot of background noise where you live, fans are an effective and inexpensive way to dull that noise. especially if you have a partner who snores at night. The white noise helps you to get the unwanted sound neutralized and aids in better sleep.

Controlling temperature:

Fan can be the low cost machines which helps in controlling the temperature in your room. May be it doesn’t control temperature like that as the air conditioners. This can be a low cost air conditioning unit.

Fan can help your good sleep especially people who get hot during the night. If you are sleeping with your doors and windows closed ,fan can help in keeping your bed cool by air circulation.

According to some studies, they can even help prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The reason is that high temperatures and increased CO2 levels put babies at risk. Running a fan lowers the temperature and decreases the air’s concentration of carbon dioxide.

Few drawbacks of using a fan:

Stiff muscles and cramps:

People who sleep with a breeze directly on them may wake up with stiff or sore muscles. This is because the concentrated cool air can make muscles tense up and cramp. This problem is especially common for people who sleep with it near their face and neck. If you’ve been waking up with a stiff neck in the morning, it might be because of the constant breeze.

Allergies, asthma , sinusitis issues:

The new study has shown that using fan can be a reason for the allergies and allergy related issues and could be bad for some one who is suffering from asthma.

According to Mark Reddick, writing on The Sleep Advisor, “For some people, having a ceiling or floor fan in the room helps them fall asleep and stay cool during the night. For others, it can keep them awake, trigger asthma attacks or dry out their eyes.”

“As a fan moves air around the room, it causes flurries of dust and pollen to make their way into your sinuses,” he explained. “If you’re prone to allergies, asthma, and hay fever, this could stir up a whole lot of trouble.

He recommended people clean their fans before they use them. He said: “If it’s been collecting dust on the blades, those particles are flying through the air every time you turn it on.

Dry skin:

People also risk dry skin by using fans. “A constant blast of air on your body may cause dry skin. Lotions and moisturizers will help prevent this, but if your skin is excessively dry, use caution and monitor your skin to make sure you’re not over drying it,” mark explained.

“Another thing to consider is that some people sleep with their eyes partially open. Again, a steady air stream will dry your eyes and may cause major irritation.

CONCLUSION:

There are both advantages and disadvantages of using a fan. For people who are suffering from allergic conditions like allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma etc having a fan could be bad idea especially in a closed room leading to a indoor pollution.
